Optimizing Antenna Performance for Module Integration

Peak Gain Considerations

Many module manufacturers provide peak gain limits for antennas that are to be connected to their modules. These limits are based on free-space conditions. However, when an antenna is placed inside a device, its peak gain can degrade by at least 1 or 2dBi. To compensate for this effect and achieve better performance, it is recommended to select an antenna with slightly higher peak gain than specified in the module's requirements.

Keesun Testing and Compliance

Keesun conducts thorough testing of antennas with various devices, layouts, integration techniques, and cables. We ensure that the peak gain of our antennas remains below the specified limits. We can provide a detailed specification and/or report for the selected antenna in your device, demonstrating compliance with the peak gain limits. This ensures that your device meets regulatory requirements.

Optimizing Antenna Selection

For example, if a module manufacturer specifies a peak gain limit of 2dBi, it is not necessary to choose an embedded antenna with a peak gain of less than 2dBi in free-space. This may result in a suboptimal solution. It is better to select an antenna with a slightly higher free-space peak gain of 3dBi or more, if available. Once integrated into your device, the antenna's performance will naturally degrade below the 2dBi peak gain due to factors such as the GND plane, surrounding components, and device housing. If you require absolute certainty, please contact Keesun for testing.

Achieving Optimal Performance with Keesun

By choosing a Keesun antenna with a higher peak gain than specified by the module manufacturer and leveraging our expertise, you can ensure that you achieve the best possible performance without exceeding the peak gain limits.
